I...You know, this story has special meaning for me. I worked at UVA in the poli sci dept on my PhD and taught for the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute, which "lures" minorities away from careers in law and into poli sci. While I was here, the Sally Hemings story "broke" in 1998. That is to say, an NY Law School professor collected as many facts as she could and laid out the case for Hemings and Jefferson's children. It was a firestorm in C-ville for years. Including the tour two weeks ago, I've done the Monticello tour now 13 times. The last before that was in 2007, when the Jefferson Society still negated that Hemings' children were from Jefferson and chalked up the "rumors" to oral history. I won't digress as to why that's about as weak an argument as one can get when dealing in part with history passed down during slavery. This year's tour was the first time the docents openly addressed the issue and acknowledged the children as Jefferson's. Progress? It only took 186 years.Stacy Nyikoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07830844058919457619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-770331077089775301.post-46621493377110640742012-04-04T12:03:57.213-07:002012-04-04T12:03:57.213-07:00This sounds fantastic.
